By Chloe Amaya, Director of Homeowner Services
While the physical construction of a house is the most visible part of our work, our mission lies within the Homeowner Services department. This is where the transition from “applicant” to “homeowner” happens, and it is one of the primary areas slated for transformation through our $40,000,000 Building A GREATER Boston campaign.
Scaling the Path to Ownership
The housing crisis in Boston has created a bottleneck. We currently face an approximate 300:1 inquiry-to-home ratio. The campaign is specifically designed to expand the capacity of Homeowner Services to:
- Increase Outreach: Hiring more dedicated staff to guide hundreds of additional families through the complex application and qualification processes.
- Broaden the Pipeline: Moving from serving a handful of families annually to managing a significantly larger roster of partner families across multiple new developments.
- Enhance Education: Expanding our financial literacy and home maintenance curriculum to ensure that, as we scale, new homeowners are equipped with the skills for lifelong success.
- Home Preservation Program: This program provides critical repairs and accessibility improvements to help local low-income homeowners remain in their homes safely and affordably.
The Sweat Equity Engine
The campaign enables us to manage and facilitate thousands of additional Sweat Equity hours. By scaling our operations, we can coordinate more partner families as they fulfill their 200-hour commitment:
- On-Site Support: Families working on an increasing number of simultaneous builds across Greater Boston.
- The ReStore: Expanding its footprint with a new ReStore in Watertown, MA, to create more opportunities for families to build equity and fuel the retail engine that drives our growth and their path to homeownership.
The Bottom Line
The Building A GREATER Boston campaign isn’t just about more lumber and nails; it’s about increasing the bandwidth of the department that fosters dignity. By investing in the infrastructure of Homeowner Services, we are ensuring that the dream of an affordable home becomes a reality for more families without ever sacrificing the “partnership” model that makes Habitat unique.
