Rules for Group Volunteer Participation
  1. Choose a team Group Build Safety Captain to start the organization process. The captain is responsible for organizing the day, attending the mandatory orientation session (for those groups who have not volunteered with us in the last three years), becoming familiar with the Safety Checklist, and helping to ensure that volunteers have a safe work environment in which to work. The Group Build Safety Captain can always designate someone else to perform these tasks as well- just please make sure that they are fulfilled.
  2. Recruit between 5 and 12 people to be on your team. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and there must be one adult for every two 16-17 year-olds in a group. Team members can be friends, coworkers, relatives, or people from your church or any other organization. Please Note: Unfortunately, we are unable to accept groups of more than 12 people. If your group exceeds 12 people you may consider scheduling an additional group slot.
  3. To offset the high cost of building here in Greater Boston, we require each corporate team to raise $2,000 per weekday build group and $3,000 per weekend build group. Special Events can be arranged for $8,000 a day. All other groups, including school-based, faith-based and other non-profits are encouraged to raise a minimum of $750 per build group. Because Habitat Greater Boston is a non-profit organization that receives no government funds for home construction costs, we are totally reliant on organizations like yours to help us continue our mission. The money that you raise will go towards building materials, supervision, and other supplies. Here are some ideas about how your team can raise money:
    • Pledges: Team members may use a pledge sheet to obtain sponsors from friends, co-workers, relatives, etc. If you work at a corporation, check to see if your company matches funds. Many companies will match funds for every dollar that you raise (or for every hour that you do community service work). Be sure to talk to your company's Human Resources Department to see how they can help.
    • Fundraisers: Consider sponsoring a bake sale after your church services or a special event to raise funds.
  4. Each team leader is responsible for gathering individual donations from their team members and mailing it to the Habitat Greater Boston office at least one week before your build day. If donors request an acknowledgment, please provide Habitat Greater Boston with a list of their names, addresses and amounts donated along with the donations.
  5. If you need to reschedule, please do so at least one month before your build day. Contact Habitat Greater Boston's Volunteer Coordinator.
  6. Your build date(s) will not be booked unless and until you check for availability on our online calendar and complete and fax the Registration Form to the Habitat Greater Boston office and receive confirmation.
